Beta program

Help us break the screen-capture detection.

Copywarden 0.9.7 (build 1644) is the current beta — a signed, notarized universal build for macOS 14 or later, free during the beta with no account and no card. It detects screen capture and redacts previews while capture is active. That is detection and redaction, not invisibility: no macOS app can make a window unseeable to ScreenCaptureKit, and we want to know where ours fails on Macs that are not ours.

What we want broken

Run the capturers. Tell us what the capture shows.

For each one: open the Copywarden popup (⌘⇧V) with at least one clip visible, start the capture, and look at the captured output — not the screen. A "captured" answer is a useful result, not a complaint; we expect to pass some of these and fail others.

⌘⇧5 and the screencapture tool

What we expect: The window IS captured. Previews should be redacted behind a banner while the Screenshot tool is up.

What to report: Were previews readable in the capture? How long until the banner appeared — immediately, about a second, longer, never?

QuickTime screen recording

What we expect: The window IS captured. 0.9.0 ships a detection fix that has never been confirmed on a real recording.

What to report: Start a recording, open the popup: does it redact? Then stop, play any video in QuickTime: the banner must NOT appear. Either answer is the most useful report on this page.

OBS Studio

What we expect: The window IS captured. OBS Studio is on the detector list; previews should redact while it runs.

What to report: Did the redaction fire? Did anything detected as a secret ever appear readable in the recording? That last one is a blocking defect — say so.

Anything else you use

What we expect: Unknown — Loom, CleanShot X, ScreenFlow, remote-desktop hosts, anything that records or shares a window.

What to report: Name the capturer and what appeared in its output. This is the cell we cannot fill ourselves.

Zoom (control), Microsoft Teams, Google Meet

What we expect: The window is NOT captured by the share. Measured on our Macs for Zoom only — Teams and Meet are untested, so a result from either is a new finding, not a confirmation.

What to report: Confirm it on yours. A "not captured" here tells us the control ran; a "captured" here is a new finding.

Known issue going in: the QuickTime detection fix in 0.9.0 is unverified on a real recording — reproducing it either way closes a gap in our own evidence. A frame captured in the instant before detection may still include previews; the threat model says so, and question D9 in the report measures how wide that window really is.

The tester matrix

Eight slots. We are shortest on Intel and on macOS 14.

Five or more testers across at least three macOS versions and both architectures is the evidence base the beta needs — the matrix is not a target, it is what makes a "we found nothing" mean something. Tell us your macOS version and chip in your first message so the slots fill deliberately.

Anything older than macOS 14 cannot run this build. If you are on an Intel Mac of any supported version, you are the slot we are least likely to fill from a forum post — please say so.

How to report

One email. Ten lines. A person reads it.

Reports go to support@copywarden.com. The button below opens a draft in your mail app with the subject and the ten questions filled in — the site sends nothing, and neither does the app. Correct the build in the subject if yours differs; it is in Copywarden ▸ About.

What the ten lines ask

A: build, macOS version, chip. B: did it launch, and did Gatekeeper say anything (exact wording). C: copy → ⌘⇧V → paste back, and anything missing or unexpectedly present. D: the capture table above. E: was a fake key masked — never send a real one. F: what broke, what you expected, whether you would keep it, and whether we may quote you.

If it crashed

Attach the report from Console ▸ Crash Reports (~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/, filename starting Copywarden). Please ask before attaching anything else — a diagnostic bundle from a clipboard manager can contain clipboard content, which is the one thing we should not be collecting.

If it scared you

A suspected security defect does not go to this address. Use the disclosure policy so it reaches us privately and is handled properly — safe harbor for good-faith research is written down there.

The encrypted core is free permanently — the Free-Forever Commitment is the receipt. The threat model names every threat class, the shipped mitigation, and the residual risk we do not claim to solve. There has been no independent security audit; the site says so wherever it matters.
